Peter and Elizabeth Ochs immigrated to the USA from Germany on the ship William Tell. They arrived in New York City on October 25, 1855. Peter was 32 years old and Elizabeth was 25 years old. They had three children with them: Peter, 6 yrs. old, Wilhelm, 2 years old, and August, 7 months old.
The 1860 Census Records shows that Peter and his wife, Johanna, are residing in Mitchell, Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. Peter Ochs is listed as being a farmer, age 42 years old, with real estate valued at $300. In addition to their three sons, they now had a baby girl named Mary. She was born in Wisconsin in 1859. There are different names given for the wife of Peter Ochs on various records which may indicate that Elizabeth may have died and he remarried a woman named Johanna who also went by the name of Anna. Various family members changed the spelling of the surname from Ochs to Oachs, Oaks and Ohs.
The 1870 Census Record show the family is living in Lincoln Township in Blue Earth County, Minnesota. They are incorrectly listed as the "Ox" family. They now have four more children: Elizabeth, Mary Amelia, Henry and Arthur. The 1870 Agriculture Census show Peter Ochs owning livestock and raising wheat, indian corn and corn.
In 1880, I am unable to find any census records for Peter Ochs. Henry Ochs is shown as being adopted by Sophia Vought who is a sister to Elizabeth Stoppelmann, wife of Peter Charles Oachs. The other children are listed as being with various families in the Cottonwood County area in Minnesota. Somewhere between 1870 and 1880, Peter and Anna Ochs died leaving their children orphaned. Henry Ochs moved to Nebraska and changed his last name to Ohs. Adolph changed his last name to Oaks.
