Whilma Nomia Oachs was born in Sterling Township, Minnesota. She was the twelfth child of sixteen children born to William and Minnie (Ward) Oachs. She married Ovald Smith on December 7, 1941.

Ovald Smith served in World War II for four years. Ovald and Whilma farmed their 240 acres of land five miles west of North Mankato, Minnesota.

Ovald and Whilma Smith had three children. Whilma is now retired and still living on her farm in North Mankato, Minnesota.  Her son and grandson, now farm the land.
